To LOVE is to OBEY

Obedience for a Christian is not optional

If ye love me, keep my commandments. And why call ye me, Lord, Lord, and do not the things which I say? If a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him. ~ John 14:15; Luke 6:46 ~ John 14:23

Jesus could hardly have been more clear regarding the message He was sending in those verses. If we don't obey Him then we are not serving Him and therefore we are not His disciple. In such a case it is pointless to call Him Lord for clearly He is not the one we follow if we do not obey Him.

God, the Father of Christ sent Him to earth. Several times Christ indicated He had a choice, had free will but at each turn He chose to obey the Father. Why? Because He loved God.

But that the world may know that I love the Father; and as the Father gave me commandment, even so I do. Arise, let us go hence. ~ John 14:31

When the mob, led by Judas was come to take Jesus, one of His Disciples drew his sword and cut off an ear. Jesus told him to put his sword away, there would be no fight because Jesus had every intention of carrying out what the Father wanted and would please Him, even though just shortly before, Jesus had agonized in prayer sweating drops of blood.

Thinkest thou that I cannot now pray to my Father, and he shall presently give me more than twelve legions of angels? ~ Matthew 26:53

Millions who say they are Christians today fail to obey the Word of God. They claim that to do so is a form of legalism and is mans attempt to add to the grace of God. Those who make such claims are for the most part simply unlearned in the Bible and do not understand just what Grace is and is not. Most of them have abandoned their duty to study and have blindly turned the care of their soul over to someone else. They love this world and don't want to forsake it and it's pleasures, and so they take heed to soothing words. Words that speak what they want to hear and that allow them to supposedly walk with one foot serving Christ (when convenient) and the other serving the flesh and this world. This is why so many who say they are saved are so easily deceived.

People by their nature want Christ for the next life, and they want all that this world offers for the fulfillment of their lusts. However, Jesus clearly called His followers to die to self! That is not mere words with no meaning folks, it is a very definite lifestyle when one truly dies to self and to this present world. For the Christian, the Bible does not give us the liberty of rejecting this admonition. It does not give us a choice, but clearly teaches that if we are His Disciple, we are to be obeying and following Christ which includes being dead to self and the world. Those who are dead to this world are not trying to please this world, nor do they chase after it’s trinkets and pleasures which steal the hearts of so many.

Far too many today seem to have the idea that God is pleased and that almost everybody is going to Heaven. That there is no need to worry about obedience, holy living, or the other things Christ commanded for the church and for individuals. Even if the majority believe this popular concept of everyone going to Heaven, it is a false doctrine and the problem lies in the fact that God is not influenced by popular opinion.

Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils; ~ 1 Timothy 4:1

Folks, I have had pastors, supposedly men of God, turn red faced with neck veins bulging call me everything but a Christian because I believe we are required to OBEY the Word of God in order to be saved. Don’t misunderstand me, I’m not saying obeying saves us, I’m not saying that. I am saying that if we are saved we OBEY God's Word because obedience and love are inseparable, and each completes or fulfills the other. If we are not willing to obey God's Word and do not obey God's Word then we cannot be and are not saved.1 Same as what the Lord said. Your pastor may blow this off and tell you it is heresy, legalism, or simply failure to understand the Gospel. The thing is, your pastor will not be answering for you when you stand at the Judgment Seat of Christ to give account of your doings since you were saved. You will do that with no help so don’t you think you better be sure? Are you going to trust someone else, no matter how well meaning they may be, with your eternity, or are you going to buckle down like the Scriptures instruct you do and study? Seek God, ask Him for understanding and wisdom and if this takes six days, six weeks, or six months is up to you and God. If you ask God to show you, don’t slap Him in the face by picking up a commentary or anything besides the Bible. Read all you want to but once you seek the Lords help don’t turn back to mans words or you will get nothing from the Lord.

If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him. But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering. For he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed. For let not that man think that he shall receive any thing of the Lord. A double minded man is unstable in all his ways. ~ James 1:5-8

God's Word teaches us that before the foundation of the world was laid out God set the requirements for salvation, and obedience has always been front and center in those requirements and that will not change. Those who love the Bible enough to read and follow it, know that the way to the Lord is a narrow way and there will be few that find that path (Matthew 7:14). When we read that verse in Matthew chapter seven, I wonder if we really ponder the word few or if we just skim on past. During the days of Noah there were most likely many millions of people on the earth and yet the Bible tells us that God chose eight of them to be saved while the others all perished. Folks, that is not many at all and should give us some idea as to the serious nature of the meaning of few in the message from God. Because of the sacrifice Christ made on the cross, there will be more than eight souls saved when the end does come, but we also know that the number of saved souls will be very small compared to all that could have been saved. Each one of us should be asking ourselves which group will we be in.

If we wish to partake in that salvation Jesus made available we must love Him, and if we love Him and His ways we will obey Him. If we do not obey Him and His written Word then we do not love Him but merely give Him lip service which does us no good in the life to come.
