While reading in Deuteronomy chapter six, four verses really stood out in my mind. While these verses were written to those people of Israel in the Old Testament, they are a part of the Bible and therefore are written to all. The Bible in fact teaches that all who belong to God are of Israel. (Romans 9:8; Galatians 4:28 and others)
Many Christians today discount the Old Testament entirely as irrelevant except maybe for the Psalms and Proverbs, but nothing could be more mistaken. The Old Testament is still relevant except for the path to Salvation which is now by a new and better covenant. It is the Old Testament that teaches us the character of God, the sinfulness of sin and the price of sin along with many more important things we need to know in order to be a well rounded pleasing servant to a Holy God.
Those four verses in Deuteronomy that spoke to my heart;
And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be in thine heart: And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up. And thou shalt bind them for a sign upon thine hand, and they shall be as frontlets between thine eyes. And thou shalt write them upon the posts of thy house, and on thy gates. ~ Deuteronomy 6:6-9
Folks, I believe these verses speak perfectly to the foundational problems we are experiencing in America today. We have not done this. We have instead allowed the pursuit of personal riches, pleasure seeking, television, and false teachers to lull us into complacency.
As a nation, our forefathers honored God in a multitude of ways by obedience, prayer, giving Him the credit due, seeking His guidance and asking His blessings. The majority of Americans believed the Bible and attended church where solid Biblical preaching could be found. People had character and self discipline. That which is right was encouraged and wickedness and error were punished and banished from the main arena. Life was counted as precious and babies as a gift from God. This brought the blessings of God on every aspect of this once tiny nation. Soon we were helping to feed the world, setting examples of how good government should be run and how freedom, righteousness, and blessings of God could defeat enemies and raise up a mighty empire.
Today, in 2017 and for the last few decades we have become less Godly, less moral, less wise, and less strong. We have turned our back on our provider, our strength and our source of wisdom. We have failed to reject false doctrine, reject false teaching from the pulpit, and failed to throw out the new versions of Gods Word. Sensible people understand that the Word of God IS God 1 and God said He does NOT change2. Regardless of the date on the calendar God and His Word are the same. 3
An unholy generation is in charge now and more are coming that have no knowledge of a Holy God. They in fact have come to despise those who follow Him. They are clamoring to throw off all that they see as
restraints thinking they will create utopia, when in fact some of us can already see the slow creep of chaos and debauchery that will soon overtake us and this once great nation.
The terrible fact is that every parent, every Christian and non-Christian who has not followed the God of the Bible in Truth, who has not taught His Word to their children, and has not promoted Him and His blessings in the public square are all to blame for what is happening in America today. Sadly, we all stand as poor stewards of what God so generously gave to even the poorest of us.
I encourage you to read those verses again in Deuteronomy 6:6-9 and see where you can make a difference today whether that be a testimony at the hardware store, handing a Christian tract to a stranger, writing letters to Representatives and Presidents, or whatever God has enabled one to do. Standing silently by and offering no defense of the Bible when it is misquoted, misapplied, abused, and while God and Christ are blasphemed, is all the same as doing it yourself. Yet time after time I see and hear this happening. Grandparents are blessed to have a second chance to influence young lives for God and Righteousness.
