For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men, Teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world; ~ Titus 2:11-12
When the Bible tells us to live soberly, it is not just referring to our alcohol intake, but is admonishing us to live serious minded. This body of flesh we all inhabit today loves to live it up and make lite of everything. There is a time for humor and a time for a chuckle I'm certain since we read in the Bible:
A merry heart doeth good like a medicine: but a broken spirit drieth the bones. ~ Proverbs 17:22
Still we must be careful when and from what we are getting our laughs. Increasingly television is mocking and laughing at things that should not be laughed at or mocked. Christians need to be on guard that they are not caught up in such blasphemies and contributing to the moral breakdowns in this permissive age by watching such programs. If we are all running around laughing like loons at everything the world laughs at then we will never be taken seriously as Christian disciples.
Knowing that we live in a hurting, lost, and dying world should be enough to break the heart of any Christian and bring a soberness, a seriousness of mind to their life and spirit. This is a part of being a light to the world and shows the lost who are in need of hope, that sin, pain, and suffering are serious business to the Christian. Who among us would go to a doctor who waved his scalpel around and used it as an excuse to entertain himself all the time? God gave His Son, and many an unsaved person will give their soul, and that seems to be plenty of reason for a sense of sobriety in our lives and most especially in the church where unfortunately we find far too much joking and laughter these days.
It seems that some churches have totally abandoned any thought of serious thinking or behaviour as everything concerning their church appears to be about having fun. In fact I know and have known many Christians who have never, in my presence, exhibited an ounce of seriousness toward Biblical things or the state of the world or our society. Instead they appear to be all about lightheartedness 24/7. The concept of church being fun is a relatively recent development and is not taught or even hinted at in Scripture. The simple fact is that a
fun church is a carnal church as the Spirit of God and fun do not and cannot co-exist.
Traitors, heady, highminded, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God; ~ 2 Timothy 3:4
For several decades now children are indoctrinated into seeking and expecting everything to be fun from the moment they are born. When Sunday School is made to be an exercise in fun it is actually an entertainment of the flesh and a booster for the carnal nature. This imprints upon the child's mind that Church and Sunday School are just one more of the many choices they have in life for entertaining themselves. Is it any wonder they so often grow up and into more adult forms of entertainment completely abandoning Church which first taught them to pleasure the flesh nature.
For these folks church is no longer as much fun as it once was and having concentrated on showing them a good time the church neglected to work on the important things that binds one to Christ such as faith, love of things Holy, and denial of the flesh for example.
And they that are Christ's have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts. ~ Galatians 5:24
The idea of church being fun possibly came about because some who claimed to be Christians did not want to be associated with all the uncomfortable persecution and exclusion that Jesus said we would experience if we followed Him. So they set about to show the world that they were like them in every way except they called Jesus Saviour. They were successful in attracting many of the lost to their churches but sadly those folks got what they came for and most were never converted. This is why we see so many churches that are constantly seeking some new fun activity before their congregation goes to another church where their carnal hunger can be fed.
The King James Bible makes Titus two, eleven and twelve, the verses quoted in our opening, quite clear although some translations available today leave another impression. Some are misled into thinking that the teaching to live "soberly, righteously, and godly" only applied to a certain "age" or period of time. When we read the King James Bible we are not left doubting and wondering, but can know that living a pleasing life unto the Lord while we are IN THIS WORLD, is not only the will of God, it is a requirement, regardless of the date on the calendar.
Folks, Satan comes as an angel of light (2 Corinthians 11:14) and if we have not crucified our flesh as the Bible teaches that a Christian must do, we will be led away by the desires and lusts of that same flesh. Today millions have been deceived and whether knowing or not, they have rejected the true Gospel of Christ for one created by man because
t seems right or it is fun. What the Word of God says is right and what the carnal flesh
feels is right are nearly always two different things.
For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live. ~ Romans 8:13
We should ask ourself who and what am I guided by, God's unchanging Word, or my whimsical flesh?
